Simsolia Shapopi - Bachelor of Criminal Justice in Policing

Brief: A Security guard and a part-time Student at NUST

Tell us about yourself and your journey to becoming a NUST Student? My name is Simsolia Shapopi, born in Onankali-North, in the Ohangwena Region. I have two siblings and was raised by a single parent. I completed my grade 12 at Onguti Secondary School in Oshikoto region in 2006. My grade 12 results were however not pleasing to further my studies, therefore I decided to improve through NAMCOL. In 2014 I started working at the Namibia Protection Service as a security guard and was allocated to work at the Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST) library. Seeing students in the library gave me courage to continue with my studies, even though my points were not enough to be admitted at NUST. Working at the NUST library gave me the opportunity to talk to the staff members about mature age entry. In 2016 I applied through mature age and I was admitted in the Bachelor of Criminal Justice in Policing. Currently I am a second year student.

What inspired you to study Criminal Justice? Why did you take Policing as your major? Growing up I always acted as a Police Officer when we played ‘Play Houses’ and this inspired me to study Criminal Justice. I like law and order, and after completing my studies I want to be involved more in law enforcement.

How will you use this qualification and the knowledge gained to benefit NUST and the community at large? I will promote the institution image all the time and inspire the community. I will also inspire and encourage the Namibian youth to work hard.

What word of encouragement can you give to the Namibian youth that had given up on their education? It’s never too late to go ahead with your education. In life there is always two options, if plan A is not working, than go for plan B.

What are you passionate about and what motivates you in life? The ball is in your own hands and to let your dreams to come true. I am mostly inspired by the old Citizens that are still studying.
