AUGUSTE E.K. IILEKA - BACHELOR OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Brief: Cum Laude Student (2015)

You recently received Cum Laude award for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science course during April 2016 graduation. How do you feel about this achievement? I thank God for this, I could not have done this without Him. I feel extremely blessed. I am proud of myself. Hard work and prayer truly do pay off.

What is your learning style and how would you encourage others? I made sure I attended all my classes and take notes in class. I also had the best lecturers who were of much assistance and the best classmates also; we often worked together and helped each other out. I study regularly and understand my courses, instead of cramming. I make use of the books in the library and the internet for extensive reading and did not entirely depend on my course notes. Do not be an island. Study together with your classmates and ask for assistance from your lecturers when you don’t understand something. Study hard and ask for strength and understanding from the Lord. Also study in a place where you are comfortable and feel that you can concentrate in-I was often in the library.

What inspired you to study Biomedical Science, and why did you choose to study at NUST? I was inspired to study this course, because it is interesting, intellectually stimulating and also because it enables me to help other people. Biomedical science is a very interesting and broad course, with a main focus on disease diagnosis. Medical Laboratory scientists perform a full range of laboratory tests ranging from simple blood tests, to more complex tests to uncover diseases such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, hepatitis and cancer. They also do antibiotic sensitivity testing and drug resistance testing amongst others. They are responsible for confirming the accuracy of test results, and reporting laboratory findings to pathologists and other physicians. This information that a Medical Laboratory Scientist gives to the doctor, influences the medical treatment a patient will receive and therefore they play a major role in the healthcare system. Why NUST? To the best of my knowledge, Biomedical Science was only offered at NUST by the time I finished high school. The education I got from NUST, I believe is world class-So, a big thank you to my lecturers.

What are your plans for the near future? I plan on specializing in blood transfusion technology next year.
