Mally Samuel - Student: Honors in Informatics

Brief: Namibia University of Science and Technology Student currently studying at the University of Finland.

What are you studying and how did you end up in Finland? I am a student at the Namibia University of Science and Technology, pursuing my Honors in Informatics, and currently in my final semester. My lecturer advised me to apply for the student exchange program between the University of Finland and the Namibia University of Science and Technology.

How would you compare Namibia to Finland? People in Finland are very good and they are very helpful, which is great considering everything here is written in Finish and it is a very difficult language. Universities in Finland are free compared to those in Namibia. Also, they do not offer part-time classes, but only full-time classes. Living in Finland is costly, and everything is quite expensive. However Finland is really a safe place and people can travel any time.

Major accomplishments: My studies in which I am doing very well. I am also involved in projects that are connected to Namibia, as well as to the Namibia University of Science and Technology. We are working with systems, projects and prototypes that can benefit Namibia.

What will you do with what you have learned from Finland? Namibia is real poor when it comes to ICT skills. When learners go to universities they need to do Computer User Skill as a module in their first year, in order to learn basic computer skills. When I come back, I want to do something in high schools where learners can be taught basic computer skills at school level to enhance their ICT skills. I will also be working to make people’s lives easier by helping small or informal communities in Namibia to grow through enhancing their skills, helping them to find jobs online, and to do something for themselves.

General advice: Study. Education gives us the platform to make something of ourselves. Please do travel. It opens your mind and it makes you see the world in a different way. You will have an amazing experience.
