Mercy Kakujaha- Bachelor honours in Journalism and Communication Technology

Success: Youngest journalist to appear on NBC’s “The week that was; Only Namibian delegate at Southern Africa Journalists Association in South Africa and intern at Southern Times newspaper.

Success advice:I think the school of journalism is one of the best as it has a fine balance between practical and theoretical subjects, lecturers like Ms.Wanja Njuguna who pushed me hard in my advanced writing class which in a way got me the internship at the southern times. Her class put my writing and reporting skills on par with those already in the indsutry. At the beginning of my internship at the Southern times, I found it tricky to grasp how to create a niche in the industry as well as creating contacts for stories. However with advice from my lecturers I quickly caught on quickly and started playing a bigger role at the Southern times newspaper. As a result of my good work I was invited on “The week that was” which is a weekly show aired on NBC television, never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be sitting next to some of my role models analysing news. This was all due to the manner in which the Namibia University of Science and Technology facilitates internship programmes, by advising on the best possible opportunities and issuing motivational letters for placement at various other institutions such as the southern times. I am not personally involved in extra-curricular because my focus is primarily on my education.

Success Quote: Work hard at your goals in class and never limit your capabilities by not trying, trying something that seems impossible is only but the first step to get that distinction.
